What the Bible Says About Respect?

One of the most amazing facts in life is the difference between men and women. It’s so amazing that even those couples who declare that they are perfect for each other still battle with their differences. And if we are to sum it up to two words, as we’ve previously mentioned in one of our recent posts, it’s all about two things – Love and Respect.

Men desire respect. Respected men are able to give more love to their wife. The more loved the wife feels, the better she supports and gives respect to her husband then the cycle goes on and on. Man’s nature of wanting respect is not merely a product of their human nature. It’s a God-given design and knowing that fact should tell us that it should be acted out and encouraged to grow in them. The Bible itself speaks so much about respect most especially from wives to their husbands. Some of the Bible verses that talk about this are as follows:

“However, let each one of you love his wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband.” – Ephesians 5:33

“Likewise, wives, be subject to your own husbands, so that even if some do not obey the word, they may be won without a word by the conduct of their wives, when they see your respectful and pure conduct. Do not let your adorning be external—the braiding of hair and the putting on of gold jewelry, or the clothing you wear— but let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God’s sight is very precious. For this is how the holy women who hoped in God used to adorn themselves, by submitting to their own husbands,” – 1 Peter 3:1-6

“But I want you to understand that the head of every man is Christ, the head of a wife is her husband, and the head of Christ is God.” – 1 Corinthians 11:3

“For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior.” – Ephesians 5:23

“For this is how the holy women who hoped in God used to adorn themselves, by submitting to their own husbands, as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord. And you are her children, if you do good and do not fear anything that is frightening.” – 1 Peter 3:5-6

“Wives, submit to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord.” – Colossians 3:18

“Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord.” – Ephesians 5:22

“For man was not made from woman, but woman from man. Neither was man created for woman, but woman for man.” – 1 Corinthians 11:8-9

These are only some of the verses that you can find from the Scriptures that talk about respect for men and most especially the husbands. Respect is a response to the authority and leadership that God has placed upon men but not forgetting that they should still submit themselves to the superiority of Jesus Christ which keeps them grounded in humility as they lead their wives.

Respecting your husband does not mean that they can abuse you. Respect should be a response that will naturally come out from a wife that feels loved and valued. And even if you don’t feel loved, you are still subject to your husband’s authority. If it’s hard to do, Jesus can make it happen for you. When a husband bows down to the ONE who is in a greater authority than him, you can be sure that all will go well. If he doesn’t, don’t lose hope! Lift it up in prayer and be a woman of faith. Nothing is ever impossible for God. Your job is to obey and to obey means to respect the man God has put you under.
